Design & Technology

At Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursery, children receive a design and technology curriculum which allows them to develop their creativity through designing and making. The children are taught to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding to then design and make a product. Skills are taught progressively throughout the school to ensure that all children are able to practice and develop their skill as they move through the school. Design and technology gives children with opportunity to evaluate, adapt and improve which are keys skills for children to learn and implement throughout their lives. Design and technology is a very transferable subject, the skills and knowledge learned can be applied to other subjects including Maths, Science and Art.

Intent:

EYFS:

Children in Early Years will learn Design and Technology through first-hand experiences. They are encouraged to explore, observe, solve problems, think critically, make decisions and talk about why they have made those decisions.

KS1: The national curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Implementation

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year on year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

Children’s interests are captured through project design briefs, giving them purpose, motivation and meaning for their learning.

Inclusion

At Langley Mill CofE Infant School and Nursery we ensure that our lessons are planned and assessed to provide a creative and inspirational implementation of Design and Technology and to support the inclusivity of all children throughout the school. When planning Design and Technology, staff ensure that activities are inclusive and accessible to all, including those with SEND, matching and challenging pupils’ abilities.
